CONGRATULATIONS, LOURDES!!!!!

Dear partners,

At least we have a lovely collection about our culture in English. How many times have we tried to explain some of these ideas to you?

Most of you have eaten here and have learnt our dances. Now you have more information about our country in English.

The Etxepare Basque Institutes seeks to promote disseminate Basque language
and culture throughout the world. They also wish to spread the creative expressions of Basque artists, musicians, dancers, writers, film directors, and actors. Thus, they have published this collection to spread the word about our language, Euskara, and some cultural disciplines.

Enjoy it!

Interview with Mikel Landa (Cyclist of Euskaltel Euskadi team)
Mikel Landa (Murgia, Basque Country, 13th of December of 1989) is a young cyclist of Euskaltel Euskadi who has a lot of future. He is a nice and polite boy and spends a half an hour talking with me in his house, in Murgia.
He tells that he started in cycling when he was 13 in the team of his village to try it, he stayed there and he started to be better of his mates when he was 16 and he won his first race. And since then he started to improve a bit every year until he was called by Naturgas team, which was affiliate with Euskaltel. When he knew that he didn’t doubt about going there because it was a good team. He stayed there two years but in the second he did a very good year and they gave him the chance of going to Orbea. After being in Orbea he went to Euskaltel Euskadi professional team. When I ask him the differences between Orbea and Euskaltel, he says that Orbea is a small team to form cyclists and that Euskaltel is a team that goes to more important and harder competitions.

IGELDOKO HARRIA is a stone that weighs 134 kilos; Stone-lifters have to lift the stone as many times as possible in turns of five minutes.

Even if stone-lifters are used to lifting more than 134 kilos, this competition has a special difficulty. In fact, the irregular shape of Igeldoko stone makes the trial to be unique.

Stone-lifters do not have the chance to train with the stone, as it is not possible to train with the stone before the competition. On the other hand, during the test,  dust and resins which are usually used in these competitions are forbidden. Furthermore, hands must be washed before the competition.

I wonder if the word “peloton” is new for some of our students. I realized watching La Vuelta that “peloton” might be used by most of us to designate the collective noun for a group of cyclists, or is it bunch? pack? Das feld?

Pelotón is related to the word “pellet” and its literal meaning is little ball (early 15th century in French). It was borrowed into English through the word “platoon”.
